Hedley Sutton Community

Hedley Sutton Community is an aged care facility in Canterbury Road, Camberwell. Hedley Sutton has 100 residential aged care beds, accommodating both high and low care residents. The facility has been completely rebuilt, and was re-opened in 2008. Hedley Sutton offers several lounges and dining areas, a café, library, bowls area and comfortable outdoor areas.

Hedley Sutton first opened in 1966 in Gascoyne Street, not far from the new facility. It was named after an eminent Baptist who served as a missionary in India for 20 years before being appointed as Assistant Headmaster of Carey Baptist Grammar School.

A photographic tour of Hedley Sutton

We do not conduct tours until a bed is available for offer and we have approached family for potential placement as we need to respect the privacy and dignity of our current residents. However, we can show you photos.

Hedley Sutton staff

The staff are a dedicated team of registered nurses, personal carers, pastoral and therapy staff. These staff members work together to help residents to remain as independent as possible while receiving the care, support and assistance they need.

Staff ensure that both the resident and their family are involved when planning the resident’s care to ensure individual needs are understood and met. Staff are also supported by a varied education program.

Activities program

There is a lively activities program with both group and individual programs. Regular outings on the Baptcare bus enable residents to remain connected to the local community. Families and friends are encouraged to join in the activities.

Meals

Meals are cooked on-site with the menu reviewed by a dietician to ensure that residents’ nutritional needs are met. Choices at mealtimes also ensure that residents’ tastebuds are always tempted.

Hedley Sutton redevelopment

Hedley Sutton has been completely rebuilt and redeveloped and was opened in October 2008 by Senator the Hon Jan McLucas, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing. The new Hedley Sutton includes 100 nursing home beds and 38 independent living apartments.

An Italianate style mansion in Canterbury purchased by Baptcare in 1998 has become the centrepiece of the new Hedley Sutton Community, giving the mansion a $25 million new lease on life.

The heritage listed property created design challenges for the site’s redevelopment. This was solved by much of the mansion being refurbished to provide resident amenities such as lounges, a library and café for those living in the independent living units.

The building works keep the splendour of the original building but also include additional structures to maximise the use of land space and to provide care to more older Victorians.

History

It is believed that the mansion was built in 1870 by Scottish Migrant James McEwan, the tycoon who made his fortune from the McEwan’s Hardware Empire.

After the building changed ownership numerous times, its owner Mrs McCormick made a gift of the property to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria in loving memory of her father and mother, the late Mr and Mrs W.J. Craig.

After this it became the Craig Memorial Hostel, dedicated to the housing and care of Presbyterian female university students. This venture closed in the late 1920s, after which it became the Presbyterian Babies Home and remained so until the late 1970s. It was sold to Baptcare in 1998.
