Strathalan residents dance the night away

Strathalan held its Inaugural Residents Ball on Friday 20 October in the McKittrick Centre. Over 90 people enjoyed a great evening of fine food and entertainment. An eight piece swing band and singers performed songs such as Duke Ellington’s 1932 classic “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”.

The dance floor, especially brought in for the night, was filled to capacity until there was no space to squeeze onto it. Whether an enthusiastic dancer or observer, the smiles could be seen on the residents’ faces all night long. Many had not danced in years, others had not danced since they lost their partner, and one resident, who had not danced in his life, couldn’t believe the fun he was having.

On two occasions, the dance floor was cleared to allow residents with walking sticks or frames to take to the floor. It was great to see residents in their 90’s getting up and having a go. Many an onlooker had a tear in their eye.

The 3 course meal was catered by a resident’s son. A number of Strathalan staff and others volunteered their time to help set up, serve meals and clean up afterwards. Our thanks go to them and to Nella Horsburgh (Strathalan Community Manager) who worked tirelessly in coordinating the event.

Many positive comments were received about the night. One resident asked if we could hold a ball every month, while another, who was reluctant to dance at first, commented that "it was ten fold better than I imagined”.
