Baptcare’s Caring Friends program is an exciting volunteer project that provides support to socially isolated elderly people in Gippsland. The program is offered to clients who currently receive care through Baptcare’s community aged care program.

“Many elderly people can feel socially isolated within their community if they do not have regular contact with friends or family. It is vital that programs like ‘Caring Friends’ continue to operate in order to tackle the growing problem of social isolation in our community,” Baptcare’s Chief Executive, Jeff Davey said.

The program’s holistic approach tackles the feelings of loneliness that many elderly people face by partnering them with volunteers who share similar interests. The couples engage in various activities which may include going out for coffee or lunch, shopping, or simply having a chat.

For volunteer Leonie Cooke, choosing to become involved in the program has been a rewarding and emotional experience.

“I think people tend to forget about the elderly and their needs. The Caring Friends program is a great way to give back and it’s amazingly simple to be a part of. The initiative focuses on the overall wellbeing of the client. It’s a brilliant program,” she said.

Leonie met aged resident, Joe, 18 months ago. Their friendship began with a common love for dogs and soon grew into a strong friendship.

“When I met Joe, I never expected to meet such an amazing person and friend. Our friendship is something that I cannot put a price on,” said Mrs Cooke.

Unfortunately, Joe passed away recently after ill health.

“It was hard saying goodbye to someone who had become a part of my family. I am so blessed and privileged to
have met Joe. Even though it’s been tough, I’ll continue to be a part of the program as it’s brought so much to my
life. It’s a fantastic project and I highly recommend it.”

The program is currently looking for volunteers from the Bairnsdale, Korumburra and Morwell area.
